“The Rise of ‘Awesome’” by Robert Lane Greene

Central Argument: When a word is used over and over again the entire meaning of that word changes. Its not only the case with words but also with behavior, actions, and the advancing world.

In the article The Rise of Awesome, Robert Lane Greene says that the meaning of words changes over a period of time because of the amount it is used in everyday life. Actions, words and behavior changes overtime but that’s not it. Words and language change as you start using same words over and over again. I agree with Greene because in the world today there is advanced technology, the new fashion trends and classical music on vinyl records.

When you look back in time technology wasn’t as significant as it is today. Technology is making and building knowledge of tools, machines or methods of organization in order to solve a problem or perform a function. Years ago human’s use of technology began with the conversion of natural resources. Recent technological developments, including printing press, the telephone and the Internet have lessened barriers of communication. Back then people used to send letter to friends and family if they lived apart from each other. Now there is something called email therefore the idea of sending letters no more there.

Fashion the one and only word, which has a change to it everyday. Everyday there is something new that comes up and if someone famous wears it or makes use of it then its famous everywhere. During the olden days vintage look was the fashion, however, a few years ago no one knew how it was to be dressed up like a old fashioned person. Now once again wearing old fashioned jumpsuits and wearing frilly frocks are in fashion. A lot of Teenagers didn’t like wearing lacey stuff. Now everything has a lace sequence to it. When people make use of the same things everyday they realize they need change, but however, the fashion trend isn’t forgotten.

In olden times Vinyl Records were played since they had no technology however, even though we have technology now vinyl records are starting to come back. Although not many people buy them because of they have better devices in the world today, Vinyl records still seem to be very significant as they display the love for music from a very long period of time. Antique pieces have always seemed to charm people and it rewinds their memory to the past. Vinyl Records are antique records, which are played at fund-raisers for old people and wine drinking parties because they seem to set the mood of the crowds.

People love to revive things from the past. As one can see technology, fashion trends, and records have made their way from the past to the present. However as these things have been used over and over again, just like the word ‘awesome’ their sense and meaning have changed. As the world advances we sometimes run out of new things and we use old things just in our own way. This once again shows how ‘awesome’ was once a very pure word but now it’s a common word, however, still has several different meanings.

Of marriage and single life...

Central Argument: I agree with Francis Bacon because men who are not married become more successful, successful men are recognized by the society therefore men who are unmarried are successful and recognized by the society such as: Einstein, Newton and my brother.

When marriage enters the picture, double standards and financial imbalances leave responsible men to pick up the slack and fix the mess she may have made of her finances. Men are forced to spend their hard earned savings, or take out a loan on a diamond ring. It isn’t fair for men who work hours and hours to spend their money on stupid things that his family would need. Being married with kids is a very hard responsibility. Taking care of a family is not an easy job. A hard earned man who has to satisfy his family with all the ‘wants’ isn’t easy either. Some men are more concerned with realizing their dreams of owning a home and becoming financially stable enough to begin a family and responsibly provide for their welfare. However after reading the essay of Sir Francis Bacon I agree that men who are not married become more successful. Successful men are recognized by the society; therefore men who are unmarried are successful and recognized by the society for example: Newton, Steve Jobs and my brother.

Newton who contributed to society largely tells it all that unmarried men have enthusiasm to make a difference. Newton came up with law of motion, which is studied in all physics classes. Another discovery was about light and the properties of light. He spent months in a darkened room doing experiments. He passed a beam of sunlight through a prism and discovered that the beam of light was broken down into different colors. Now when the light idea is thought about it seems like its common sense but however, Newton showed is knowledge to the world. If Sir Isaac Newton had got married he probably wouldn’t pursue in what he was currently doing and would have to definitely pay more attention towards family.

Similarly Steve Jobs from the very beginning of his life worked hard and the hard work definitely paid off in the world today. He never knew sitting in a calligraphy class would later help him in his life to come up with different typefaces. Before Jobs got married he gave his full attention towards his company. The innovation of Mac was made before his marriage, when he was free of responsibilities. In 1991 when he got married, he had to take a step forward towards his family and therefore he could not help as much as he could with the company. My point here is to say that marriage is not an easy step that can be taken in life. Once you are married, family comes first and then other futile issues. Marriage takes up half your life as you have to continue to support the family.

My brother who is 25 years old has not been married, yet, has made a name for him in the city of New York and all over the world. Although he is not known by his name, his industry is extremely famous. He owns spas all over the world such as in places like: London, Miami, New York, various districts of New York, Hawaii and many more. He once had a conversation with me which made me think of my future. Do I want to get married? Was the question that lingered in me. He stated that getting married needs a lot of time and responsibilities and without these two qualities he can function much faster than when he will get married. He himself knows that along with marriage one should be able to sacrifice A for B (whatever the family wants).

If a man enters a marriage saved up a down payment for his dream home, it can be swiftly snatched right out from underneath him. Many men may object to spending such a large sum of money on what is basically a very expensive one-day, four hour party. It isn’t fair that men have to work their butts off to pay money for what his family wants. He should be able to do what he wants with the money. After all, what a man wants is really not of any concern anymore. His wants, desires, hopes and dreams are ignored almost entirely.

Of Studies...

Central Argument: Francis Bacon argues that studies serve three main purposes: private delight, beautification of one’s personality and enhancement of one’s ability. Learning allows a person to excel more than those who are experts on only one particular trade. I agree with this because of the educational system I am currently in, Steve Jobs who perfected through experiences, and lastly the importance of liberal education.

Francis Bacon makes it clear that studies serve three main purposes: beautification of one’s personality, enhancement of one’s ability and private delight. I agree with this because seeing the huge success in Steve Jobs life. He perfected his rigid path with different experience. On the same line, in the world today the focus is on liberal education. The world concentrates on the bigger picture. Lastly studying in an international school, one can see the difference between the Indian system and the international system.

After one is shifted from an Indian system to an international system generally things become harder but definitely build up a character. The Indian system strictly concentrates on the grades/ranks one gets. Being more focused on individual leadership skills isn’t part of the Indian schools. Indian systems are very focused on particular things. On the other hand Woodstock lets each individual, strive to their best skills and excel at that particular skill. For example there are a lot of different types of arts offered in Woodstock along with music and other extra-curricular. Students including me have the great opportunity to make use of it. If one is a pro at something that doesn’t mean he or she is done, there is always space for more. Improvements can definitely be made with extra effort.

Steve Jobs who made history with his great hard works is known in the world today. As he studied calligraphy, he had no way of knowing that it would lead to the beautiful typefaces found on Mac. When he was sitting in the calligraphy class in college he wouldn’t have known that calligraphy would lead to something far and better in the future but the nonetheless throughout the world the is known for his beautiful typography which he created and which are used today. Steve Jobs had the skills to beautify his personality and contribute to the world in a larger way which he wouldn’t think of while sitting in his calligraphy class. But the world is very thankful towards Jobs because of his tremendous efforts on the new software that he created.

Steve Jobs ended up so famous in the world because of the college that he studied in. Liberal Arts Colleges are so known. Few years ago graduate students from high school had their mind set to what they want to do in life. A lot of children these days seem to have no clue on what they’d like to major in. It’s completely fine to have no clue about what you would want to do. Not everyone can have an easy path; each individual will have their hardships in life which will make them stronger eventually. Doing liberal studies will however give an opportunity to make individuals notice their strengths and weaknesses. Although one may have their strength/skill they would want to go ahead and excel in other skills too. Just because one is a professional at something that doesn’t mean you can’t take a step ahead and do something different.

Yes, people should practice and become better at what they like doing. However there should always be curiosity about learning new things. The three main purposes of studies that Francis presents in his essay shape the character within you. You would need to have a good personality in order to contribute largely to society. The way you present that you care for the society is the way you want to show yourself to the world and once again you will have to show off your skills that you have. Being good at things are different from excelling at skills, so do what you can with the skills that you have and it might turn out to be a big contribution in the world.

Is TV good for you? Well thats for you to decide!

Central Argument: TV is both an idiot box and a source of empowerment, however, it depends on the society that's watching it.

Everything has its pros and cons and so does an idiot box like TV, or some might like to call it an empowerment box. People in America are already extremely developed and therefore TV is probably just a waste of time. TV is a way to spread awareness faster regarding crucial issues however people in America rather than looking at news look at soap operas which are not extremely useful. Let’s take Gossip Girl for example, does it have anything useful, is it helping American citizens in any way? No it’s not; people are just watching people bitching about each other, and the name tells it all, it’s all about gossip, I am not saying that gossip is bad however listening to gossip about people one doesn’t even know.

It is hard to understand what the American teenagers or females get out of watching those soap operas. Thus looking at the state of America, I completely believe that TV acts like a complete idiot box. Look at the people, they are becoming obese and stupid, so therefore they must be sitting in front of the TV, hogging up snacks or looking at their ipod, or texting. Teenagers instead of talking smartly, talk stupidly, so if TV has to become a source of empowerment they should promote shows like, ‘Once there was an obese woman and now there is not.’ At least it will help them in some way.

However, I feel that the directors in India are smarter as they looked at the condition of rural areas in India and decided to spread the awareness of the conditions in rural areas. They helped build power and pride within the women and made them feel more important, for example in the soap opera, ‘Kyunki saas bhi kabhi bahu thi’ or as the author translated ‘Because once a mother-in-law was a daughter- in- law’ women realized the husband’s mistreatment towards them were not acceptable. Girls were starting to be born again because men are considered higher in villages.

India’s rural areas have one big fat issue and that is overpopulation. When there is a sale, women go and crazy and buy hoards of clothes, in the same manner women go crazy and start producing babies. However, the TV has had a great impact and has been the biggest solution for overpopulation. Therefore TV is a source of power, a source of entertainment yet a source that spreads the message and helps the people.

In the end I would like to conclude by saying that TV is good if it sends out a useful message, a message that benefits the people. Shows like, ‘Modern Family’ and ‘Gossip Girls’ are useless, instead intelligent shows like, ‘Because once a mother-in-law was a daughter- in – law’ is far much better. So I believe it depends on the place and the shows shown on this screen for rural India it’s betterment for society however for America it is creating the new decline. TV is both an idiot box and a source of empowerment.

Advertising is...?

The way an advertisement is presented shows if it is convincing or not. I believe that most advertisements are convincing.

Well advertisement doesn’t change people’s minds in seconds, but eventually a lot of people do get carried away with silly advertisements. Generations ago people didn’t know what advertisements were. Nowadays commercials hold a powerful status in the world. People want to know about new trends that are spreading and want to know everything that is in fashion. The way one presents the ad is very important. The way of obtaining audience’s attention is to make the advertisement catchy. I believe that advertising is the best way to promote a product and get the most profit out of selling it.

Usually ads have catchy music or hot guys/sexy girls to get the audience’s attention, however, having the hot guys and sexy girls makes a huge impact on the ad or rather the product itself. A lot more people will buy a product if they come to know that a famous film star also uses it or not. The people who act in the ad and the things that you use to present that ad matters the most. People need catchy ‘stuff’ to get full attention. Music is definitely one of them. The background music of an ad should match up with what the ad is talking about. For example you cannot have a jazz music while advertising for some sort of food; I mean advertisements should be carefully planned out thought about. Apart from music is the tone and attitude of the person who is presenting the ad. If the person is using positive tone and making it clear that one should buy a certain product then definitely he or she might be left thinking about it.

Some may say that advertising is not the best way to make people be aware of the new products that are being produced instead it's just a waste of money. Well, believe it or not a lot of people in the world do find that is the greatest and will always be the best way of making people aware of the new things that are brought up in the world today. Attracting boys and girls in advertising makes big impacts on getting people to buy products. Even if people charge higher rates for few particular products through advertising anything can be sold, once again it’s how you present the ad to the audience.

Advertisements cannot be forgotten. Most ads shown on TV today are very striking to the audience. A lot of times people tend to use commercials as examples in their essays or to get their point across strongly. Since the lines of advertising is such a big career choice for many in the world today it clearly shows that advertising has made a big influence in the world. Personally this article makes me wonder what will happen to advertising industries in years from now.

Great Song Analysis!

This is a song about lost love. A love that created a journey of fantasy for him. He states that his life will no longer be happy without his love. She is the beauty of his life, the sunrise and the sunset. Anything she does makes him happy and without her he'd rather. "Just like the clouds
My eyes will do the same if you walk away, Everyday it will rain, rain, rain..." The clouds symbolize his life and how the clouds are surrounded by darkness before rain comes, the same way his life is dark without her and everyday his tears will pour out and he will no longer be able to see the light of happiness. He has planned his entire future with her and now he cannot see any other man taking his place. Love brings happiness and without love everything seems empty.
