"What Does It Mean To Be Cool?"

Central Argument: People are cool only if they submit themselves to a system yet making a change or expressing oneself. Cool people are usually risk- takers however they take a risk yet they do not break the rules.

In the modern world, people call themselves cool, if they are a quarterback in a football game or if they are extremely good looking. People who are smart are not at all cool instead they are called geeks. However, it does not matter if you are a quarterback or if you are a geek, it matters if you take a risk and change the world yet confining to the system. I agree that people who have a fusion of submission and subversion within themselves are cool because as seen in the past and present such as Jesus, Thomas Moore and Bono, have all made a change yet they have not gone against any rule.

Jesus, one of the greatest examples of coolness; he went out of his way to help the people yet he never defied the system. He healed people, gave them faith, hope and love. People were depressed and soulless and they needed someone to confine in, Jesus was their savior. He died on the cross for the sins of others. He was a majestic man with powers from God. He did go against the system, yet, he did not use any violence, and instead his words were so powerful that he got most of he world to believe in him. Today, one can see his power arising amongst the people. This is what coolness is about, not bullying someone instead doing something for the betterment of the people, just like Jesus and later like Martin Luther.

Martin Luther wrote the 95 theses; which were all against indulgences and he posted it on the church wall. This in turn angered the people and Pope Leo X asked Luther to show up and recant everything he wrote. Luther wanted people to understand what God actually was and not what the church taught them. So he did apologize for most of his writings however he did not agree to reject majority of the works and the teachings in them. He did not ever go against the system, he just was expressing his views and he boldly respectfully stated, “Unless I am convinced by proofs from Scriptures or by plain and clear reasons and arguments, I can and will not retract, for it is neither safe nor wise to do anything against conscience. Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me. Amen.” He portrayed coolness through his words and the way he expressed them.

Another famous modern example is Bono. Bono is a famous humanitarian singer who helps the world through his songs. He is extremely famous all around the world and he has made a huge difference in Africa with the impoverished people, since he made people aware of the situation. One of his major projects was ending the Jubilee 2000 project, which was the Third World debt project and with his songs and speeches he ended it. So he has made a change and shown how even without defying the system you can submit and make a change.

All the three example are pure example of people who gave more than what they are suppose to the society without violating any rules or anything at all. Coolness just doesn’t apply to a person who is hot or a person who just thinks of themselves as cool but rather a person who goes beyond his measures to prove something to the world.
