75) Community service can be a valuable part of the college experience. If you were to devote one year of service to a volunteer project, what would it be, and what would you hope to accomplish? (Goucher)
If I was ever given a chance to initiate a community service project, I would look back at my high school days and come up with one of the extracurricular activity that I took part in. After collecting my thoughts, one that sticks out to me is CARE. Care which stands for Community Service and Restoration of the Environment was one of the highlights of my school life.
In CARE, we did things like: working with blind children, orphans, and unprivileged people. We also de-wormed dogs, planted seeds on neighboring hillside and every now and then we picked up trash which Woodstocker’s usually threw around campus. This has shown me the importance of the community and the world around us. Therefore I would like to continue this project which is highly beneficial for the environment. The college students would get a break from their busy schedules and help the society that they are living in.
CARE has not only brought smiles on peoples faces but also has given opportunities to the less fortunate. Once in Woodstock , I had the opportunity to go to Sharp Blind Memorial School , where I got to spend my day with blind children all the way from 6 years to 14 years. I taught them to mould clay into different shapes and sang a few different nursery rhymes, not to forget ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.’ It was an unforgettable experience.
Since CARE became such an integral part of my life I always and will always be devoted to it. CARE showed me how tough life can get for those who are rejected by society, so since then my goal is to go out and lend a helping hand. I want to make a true difference and let the society know that judging people by their standards of living is not acceptable.
